NotBSD

  • Install Debian 3.0 (Stable) – 30 minutes
  • DistUpgrade to Unstable – 30 minutes
  • Install a 2.4 kernel – 15 minutes, when built on the desktop.
  • Install a 2.4 kernel with proper networking support (I’m such a d00fus) – another 15 minutes
  • Start the Gentoo install from step 6 The bootstrap process, which normally takes about 35 minutes on my desktop machine, took about 8 or 9 hours on the laptop. I started the "stage 2" part of the install at 12:30pm today. I’m hoping it’ll be done by midnight tomorrow. I doubt it though. After that’s done, I have to build XFree86, Mozilla, and java support for Mozilla. Add another 24 hours onto the process. With all the other stuff i’ll be installing, I’m guessing my laptop should be fully functional by Friday. I hope. The benefit to this extremely long install is that I end up with a distribution of linux that’s been built EXACTLY for my computer from the ground up. I can live with that. Anyhow, this (FreeBSD-on-the-laptop) quitter is going to go off to the living room to read his book. Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!]]>

    1. Hope you are making some notes — either on paper, or in a data file — about your trial and trivailes (sp?) with this software. Could be very valuable in the future from a point of personal growth and also maybe in being able to sell yourself on the job market!
