Praise for Modern Conveniences…

CSUN, and when he came back, it ended up in our kitchen. I’d never had the opportunity to use one before, but became quickly accustomed to it. Over the years since I first moved out of my parents house, and definitely since I’ve been living on my own (aka, no house mates), my microwave has been a strong fixture in my kitchen. Most of my cooking over the last several years – since I started working in the south bay and started going out to eat for most of my meals – has been done in my microwave. With the exception of anytime I needed to fry or boil anything, I’ve cooked it in the microwave. The last several days have seen me use my oven more often than not… whether it’s been re-heating frozen foods that need baking or whatnot. Today I did something I never done before. I cooked corn dogs in the oven. Sure, I’ve been to friends’ houses in the past and we’ve had them done in the oven, but the last time I can remember this happening was over 15 years ago. Yes, it has been that long! I was really surprised how crunchy these were, and actually how much *different* they tasted because of it. Cooking in the oven is really a step back in time, I guess. It requires a certain patience I can’t say I’ve had of recent. But I must say… it’s been worth it lately. And I do declare that it is MUCH easier than using the microwave. Turn on the oven, pre-heat, set on metal tray for X amount of minutes, remove and *bamf!* dinner is served. I could get to really like this! Gah, I feel like a kid again for discovering that the big appliance that’s been taking up space in my kitchen for the last seven years I’ve been living here is actually useful! Next thing you know, I’ll find out that my dishwasher really does work… That’s all from me for now. Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!]]>

  1. Hot tip: Reheating pizza is also MUCH better in the oven.
Toaster ovens are a nice compromose between microwaves and ovens. You get the quality of oven cooking, but they heat up faster and are better suited to single-serving meals than full-sized ovens. (You can make amazing hot dogs and hamburgers in a toaster oven.)
I use the microwave primarily for re-heating certain kinds of leftovers.

  2. Next you need to try a crock pot . . . put oatmeal in before you go to bed and get up to a hot b’fast; put a meal in before you go to work and come home to a hot dinner — and the taste of something simmered for hours is wonderful, too!
    Love ya’
