For Love of a Spec Series

A1GP series. I was intrigued and immediately programmed my TiVo for a Season Pass. This series, sanctioned by the FIA, is a spec series. All cars are prepared according to spec, with spec tires and fuel. This way, all cars are the same, and it’s up to the drivers to win the races for the teams. Spec racing is good for the fans because the racing is almost *always* closer than in non-spec racing series. The NASCAR folks have had this kind of love for years since NASCAR cars must fit within certain parameters in order to be allowed to race. These series show you who the best drivers are. The cool thing about A1GP is that the drivers earn points for the team, and as such, the teams can have multiple drivers. (Which is good for the teams because it’s an off-season series.) The biggest concern I have about this excellent series is whether or not it will last. The first year this series was in operation (last year), it lost somewhere over 300 million dollars! I’m not sure what the losses will be this year, but I really hope it catches on. In the races i’ve seen so far, the action has been *way* better than F1. That, and the fact that the New Zealand team has done very well. (Yes, I *must* root for NZ!) I *really* like the fact that there are twenty-something teams representing countries who normally aren’t represented in F1. This seems to me to be a much more international series. Anyway… Not much more for me to report. I’ve put new plugs in my ear and stretched to 12.1mm (roughly half-inch). I’ll get pictures up soonish or something. Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!]]>
