Journaling FS Here I Come!

like cool weather. It keeps me from sweating too much. 😉 So my buddy Don Kane has been up the last several days working a job up in the bay area. Man, it’s nice to have some of your oldest and best friends come to visit ya. We’ve just been kicking around and shooting the bull. It’s really been nice. I don’t remember who said it, but if you can keep the friends you had when you were young, they’ll be that much more near and dear to you when you grow up. (AND, they help you keep that inner child in tact, too!) So what’s the headline today about? Well, I just finished converting most of my partitions on my linux box at home to ReiserFS, a type of journaled file system. One of the biggest problems with the "default" file system that comes with linux, the ext2fs or Second Extended File System, is that if it doesn’t get shut down properly, it gets VERY picky and does a rather lengthy file system check (fsck or “fuzz-check” as otherwise known). On bigger partitions (anything over 4 Gigabytes in size) this can take up to 15 minutes or more. (large RAIDs have been known to take DAYS to fuzz-check!) I’ve had a few problems with some buggy program locking my computer up HARD (no network, no keyboard, no mouse, no nuthin! Finally I got tired of it all and decided to convert. It was a relatively simple process … back up everything I wanted to keep on my home partition to another disk, reformat the home partition and copy it all back over to the new file system. For the /usr and /var partitions it was a little more complicated, but it was the same idea. Now I’ve got 3 of my 4 linux partitions set to this journaling file system and don’t have to worry about lengthy fuzz-checks anymore. 🙂 (it’s all part of the way JFS works). See the ReiserFS home page for more information on how it works. Oh, as a side note, I’ve experienced the joy of JFS before with BeOS, which is another lovely OS – I suggest you give it a try sometime as well. 🙂 Okay, I’ve been awake long enough today and will end today’s entry here. Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!]]>
